Business owners in the Bunbury CBD are calling for action to make people feel safer after a stabbing at the old railway station in broad daylight.
The former railway station, now the bus station, is one of the city's most historical buildings, but it is also a hotspot for crime. Last Thursday, a 40-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach, allegedly by a woman who knew him, while two years ago, a man was allegedly murdered near the site. The murder charge was dismissed in January 2022 due to a lack of reasonable chance of conviction. Data from Consumer Protection, a branch of the West Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, showed 25 to 34-year-olds reported losing more of their hard-earned cash than older Australians. A Consumer Protection spokesperson said the agency was only able to see an age breakdown of scam reports lodged online, which made up a third of the total complaints within the state. The reports received via email, phone, or Crime Stoppers did not have age details. Climate Change Minister Reece Whitby described the news as a "landmark announcement" that will help guide the state's response to climate change. And while it's been welcomed by many, some have issues with parts of the government's plans. It's all largely symbolic since the law won't have any penalties or specific requirements for individuals or businesses, but Mr Whitby said it would send an important signal to industry. Meanwhile Australia's first tropical cyclone of the season, Darian, looks set to steer well clear of the WA coast. There were complaints about the "Soviet-style" intervention and Australia's slide into the realm of tin-pot nations, and claims the laws amounted to "Armageddon" on the industry which would all but kill off investment. But on the other side of the country, a remarkable race is underway between three of Western Australia's – and the country's – richest people to secure a share of the state's burgeoning onshore gas industry. More than two years in the making, the Kwinana battery project was announced in October 2020 as a way to strengthen WA's power system, and will be capable of powering 160,000 homes for two hours. The battery soaks up power from generators or sources like rooftop solar when demand is low but supply is high – like during the middle of the day – and distributes it when the opposite is true. Celebrating the installation of the first battery units of the project in August, Premier Mark McGowan described it as a "pretty simple and neat solution to the problem we face".
