Mark MorriThe Daily Telegraph April 29, 2018 7:44PMAS a valued reader of the Daily Telegraph, here is an exclusive look at tomorrows front page tonight. Christopher Dore, Editor Sydney is now considered such a soft and lucrative target by the worlds most notorious gangs that rival nationalities are even putting aside bad blood to team up and share the spoils of tandem operations. A special investigation can today reveal how a multicultural melting pot of gangs have taken hold of Sydney. It comes as authorities warn overseas criminals simply do not fear Australian police. Mexican cartels responsible for years of mayhem are now shipping tonnes of meth into NSW. Insiders say theyre using Vietnamese gangs to sell the drugs. Armenians have also established themselves as major suppliers of cocaine. A small but growing band of organised crims from Nigeria and Sudan are causing havoc for police too. And thats just the start. https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/nsw/sydneys-united-nations-of-crime-foreign-thugs-rule-our-streets-ng-ef5973d483174eae5a6d69872ae72021 Mt Barker celebrated veteran Sam Lehmanns 200th game in style with a 60-point win over Royals in the Great Southern Football League season opener at Sounness Park yesterday.
Lehmann, one of the most decorated players to pull on a Bulls jumper, led his side through the banner and won the toss which proved decisive as his side kicked four goals with the aid of a strong breeze in the first term. With new recruits Daniel Henderson and Darren Humble having an impact around the stoppages and Nic Chidzgey also finding plenty of the ball the Bulls held sway in the second term as the Lions could manage only one major to Coel Hunter. Trailing by 16 points at half time the Lions kicked the first goal of the third quarter when Harry Broomhall made no mistake but on such a big occasion for their former skipper the Bulls again lifted with youngster Joel Gray snaring his second goal. Last seasons leading goal kicker Kym Monteath kicked four points in the third before he finally got a major and that pushed the home side 28 points ahead by the last break. The Bulls from there controlled the contest, as they kicked the final seven goals of the game, to run out comfortable winners in Lehmanns milestone match. Camera IconSam Lehmann leads the Bulls off the field after victory in his 200th league game on Saturday.Gray was superb with two goals and plenty of efficient ball use while Chidgzey, Henderson and defender Adam Tissott also impressed in the 12.11 (83) to 3.5 (23) win. Little known forward Dean Ryan played a brilliant cameo up forward with five majors, three of which came in the final term, as the Bulls produce a fitting result for Lehmann. Cent Amores was terrific for the Lions in the middle while Braden Murphy really stood up in defence given their side was without a stack of first choice players. With the newly introduced player points system, the Lions had 25 points of a possible 28 while the Bulls used 33 of their 50. Meanwhile this afternoon Denmark-Walpole got their campaign off to a winning start and they did it without boom recruit Clancee Pearce. The former Fremantle defender didnt appear in the round 1 clash with Albany at Centennial Stadium due to a heel complaint but his new teammates did enough to hold the persistent Sharks at bay. The class of Tyler Stone and Brody Hickey showed as the Magpies started well in the greasy conditions and by three quarter time led by 35 points. The Sharks kept coming as they outscored the Magpies three goals to one in the final term but it wasnt enough as they went down by 21 points in the end. Camera IconDenmark-Walpole's Jack Hickey has the ball knocked out in the tackle by Albany's Javid Mastan.Picture: Laurie BensonStone (two goals) was vital along with brothers Brody and Jack Hickey (two) as the Magpies prevailed, 10.9 (69) to 7.6 (48). Javid Mastan was the Sharks best contributor and received good support from midfielder Liam Offer and wingman Anthony Coyne. The concern for the Sharks however is midfielder Jack Banks who has a suspected broken arm. Even without Pearce and class midfielder Ryan Gaerth the Magpies were still well under their total points cap of 50 with 31 this afternoon and the Sharks fielded 30 points. The final match of the opening round will be played on Anzac Day between Railways and North Albany. https://thewest.com.au/news/albany-advertiser/bulls-fire-in-lehmanns-milestone-moment-ng-b88813816z 4/21/2018 0 Comments Action romps home in WATC Derby as William Pike and Grant Williams equal long-standing recordsChampion jockey William Pike and trainer Grant Williams equalled long-standing records in the WATC Derby (2400m) when Action delivered on his potential with a sensational win in the Group 2 feature at Ascot yesterday.
Starting a popular $3.40 favourite, Action settled midfield and sprinted powerfully in the straight to bolt in by four lengths. Like A Butterfly ($11) and Media Baron ($11) filled the minor placings. Money Maher, the $4.40 favourite, ran fourth. Pike drew level with WA Hall of Fame jockey Frank Tiger Moore on seven WATC Derby wins and Williams, who trains Action in partnership with his wife Alana, equalled JJ Kellys record of six victories in the classic. It was also an eighth derby win in WA for leading owner Bob Peters, who looks to have unveiled another star galloper in Action. The Pierro gelding was backed into derby favouritism after his eye-catching, unlucky fifth in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) on April 7. Hes a very nice horse, Peters said. Im very lucky really because I entered him in a sale and the agents didnt want to put him through, so I finished up owning him. William was brave. He took off early and went wide, but obviously the horse was ready for the race. Its a good performance considering the margin. Peters said Action was unlikely to head to Adelaide for the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) next month. Not at this stage, but you never know, Peters said. Youve got to get one thats just a tough, hard horse that eats everything and does everything right. Pike was concerned he had taken off too early on Action when sending the three-year-old to the lead at the top of the straight. I thought hed be a bit dour when I made my run so I popped out early, Pike said. But he accelerated so well and he covered the field that fast. I really thought I was in danger of being in front for too long and being run down, but as you can see by the margin he was far too good. Im just pleased to get this win on the board because Ive had a bit of a rough day and a bit of a rough trot the last few months, to tell you the truth, with suspensions and other things. Earlier, trainer Fred Kersley landed a quinella with three-year-old fillies Mizlecki and Necklet in the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m). Mizlecki, ridden by Jerry Noske, settled on the leaders back and charged home to beat her stablemate by 1 lengths. Swift Sis was third. Theyre both pretty new they havent had many starts and theyre creeping up in the handicaps, Kersley said. There are no plans following this race for the moment. Jockey Shaun ODonnell claimed his second win in the $150,000 WA Cup (3200m) when Dark Musket held off Dudemanbro in a tight finish. After settling midfield, Dark Musket ($4.40) made a sustained run and outlasted the $4.20 favourite Dudemanbro by a neck. Saxon Saxoff ($21) was third after setting the pace. ODonnell won the first ever WA Cup on Ask Me Nicely in 2015. I was pretty sure he would (run 3200m) but you never know until you run over it, ODonnell said. As you saw he kicked clear in the straight and had had enough on the line, but he was too good. Trainer Graeme Ballantyne said Dark Musket was likely to be transferred interstate to take advantage of more races for stayers. Trainer Neville Parnham celebrated a treble with Super Stardom, Discoville and Grey Enigma saluting. His eldest jockey son, Steven, produced a gem of a ride on Discoville to end his frustrating drought in the Red Shoe Society Handicap (1600m). It was the triple Group 1-winning jockeys first win since he booted home Friar Away on January 31. He rode many placegetters in more than 160 rides since his last win. It was a bit of a relief actually, Parnham said. Ive had a lot of placings without getting the winners, so it was just good to get the win today. https://thewest.com.au/sport/horse-racing/action-romps-home-in-watc-derby-as-william-pike-and-grant-williams-equal-long-standing-records-ng-b88813454z Kate Fielding | South Western Times

Friday, 20 April 2018 1:37AMCamera IconAuthorities will continue investigating a fatal blaze that led to the death of three people.Investigations into the apparent double murder-suicide of three people in a Brisbane house fire continue. Three bodies were removed from the Everton Hills home after an explosion and blaze tore through the property on Tuesday morning Graeme Thomson, 53, his ex-wife Ros Thomson, 52, and son Dylan, 24, have been formally identified as those killed in the fire. Dylan is at the centre of the police investigation, according to media reports. The fatal blaze is being investigated as suspicious and authorities will keep examining the incident for some time, a Queensland police spokesman said. The cause of the fire remains unknown but neighbours have told police they heard a loud explosion and could smell fuel as the flames began to engulf the home. https://thewest.com.au/news/crime/fatal-house-fire-investigations-continue-ng-s-1851764 Walking up and down the main street of Margaret River yesterday, the shock and disappointment was obvious.
The regions reputation as a surfing mecca has made it one of WAs most popular tourist destinations but as news broke about the cancellation of the Margaret River Pro competition, locals expressed their dismay. Shark attacks upset everybody, Walkabout Souvenirs owner Sandy Lynn said. They upset the locals and the tourists. What happened on Monday and now the Pro being cancelled as a result is going to hit businesses. This weekend coming it will be big. The international surfing event generates an estimated $5.5 million for the local economy each year. It is not yet known how much the cancellation will cost businesses. South West surf shop chain Hillzeez had been gearing up for a big few days of trading. Margaret River store manager Catherine Williams said the company had ordered extra stock and put on staff in anticipation but had now sent them home. We are all quite devastated the Pro has been cancelled, she said. It affects all of us because it is such an iconic event for our town and WA and brings a lot of people here. Being the school holidays as well we would have had a lot of families coming down as well for the Pro. We need people coming here and spending money. This event puts Margaret River on the map and does so much for the towns tourism, we really need it. Up the street at Sail cafe, manager JD Kim said the cancellation was a blow. People are starting to pack up and go home, he said. The tourism is seasonal and the Margaret River Pro is meant to be our busiest time of year. I think cafes are going to be one of the businesses hit hardest by this. It has been OK the last couple of days but the weekend was meant to be really big. Tourists were also stunned to discover the surfing event was called off. Stacey Harding brought her sons Jett, 11, and Miles, 8, to Margaret River early yesterday but arrived to find there would be no competition. Its pretty disappointing, Ms Harding said. It is a long drive just to turn around and go back again. We were only staying for the day but had hoped to watch the competition. We come down quite often, the kids all surf and they were really excited, even though we got up at 5.30am. I think they definitely need to do something about the sharks. Shire of Augusta Margaret River chief executive Gary Evershed said he hoped the cancellation of this years event was a one-off because of the exceptional circumstances. Mr Evershed criticised surfer Jason Longgrass who was bitten by a great white on the leg after ignoring a beach closure and entering the water at Lefthanders near Gracetown. One of the attacks was avoidable because the beach was closed and that didnt help I dont think, he said. https://thewest.com.au/news/sharks/shark-attack-having-impact-on-margaret-river-businesses-ng-b88809860z The family of a Perth girl who fought off leukaemia has suffered a devastating setback with doctors confirming the cancer has returned.
Six-year-old Grace McPhee, who won a State Government competition last year to have a tunnel boring machine named after her, is in Princess Margaret Hospital after relapsing from acute lymphocytic leukaemia. Grace, who finished her treatment five months ago, was one of the faces of a national campaign by The Kids Cancer Project last year, helping raise thousands of dollars for research. She was well enough to return to school this year without her nasogastric tube and with a packed lunch like other children in her class. But a few weeks ago her family was given the gut-wrenching news that her treatment had not stopped the disease spreading. Not only have cancerous cells been found in her bone marrow, Grace also has a tumour between her bladder and abdominal wall. Her mother Catherine Steel said Grace had been in excruciating pain when they took her to hospital a few weeks ago, hoping against hope that it was anything other than cancer. They saw some odd things in her blood and after that we were were taken to ward 3B (the cancer ward), so we knew then and when they did an MRI we could see it on their faces, she said. Ms Steel said it was a cruel blow and if Graces current treatment helped her get back into remission, she would invariably need a bone marrow transplant. The family will seek the opinions of doctors around the world to work out the best way to treat the cancer, which has returned mutated and stronger. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help with their costs. Its very aggressive this time and quite resistant, so we have to take one day even one hour at a time, Ms Steel said. But Gracie is the most positive girl in the world and has fought so hard. She has made a a big difference to so many people in only six years and still has many things to do in this world. https://thewest.com.au/news/health/heartbreak-as-cancer-hits-brave-perth-girl-grace-mcphee-again-ng-b88808918z Match review officer Michael Christians desire to preserve the bumps place in football played a crucial role in his decision to clear West Coast forward Mark LeCras of wrongdoing over an incident that left Gold Coasts Ben Ainsworth concussed.
Christian yesterday declared LeCras had no case to answer over his bump on Ainsworth during the third quarter of the Eagles 80-point mauling of the Suns at Optus Stadium last Saturday night. Ainsworth left the field for a concussion test and did not reappear. Gold Coast medical staff are yet to clear Ainsworth for this weeks Q-Clash against Brisbane, but LeCras is now free to play against Carlton at the MCG on Saturday. Christian said the bump was fair, despite it coming after the whistle for teammate Elliot Yeos infringement on Alex Sexton in a marking contest a moment earlier. Its important to note that you are allowed to bump in our game, Christian said. The players have a duty of care to execute the bump fairly. Camera IconMark LeCras bump on Ben Ainsworth.Picture: Channel 7In our opinion, thats what LeCras did. So he executed the bump fairly, there was an accidental clash of heads and unfortunately for Ben Ainsworth there was an impact to him. But they were the key things taken into account. LeCras didnt jump off the ground in executing his bump. He took care not to do that and we dont believe the force of the bump was excessive for the situation either. LeCras took every care to deliver the bump fairly, which is something youre allowed to do in our game. Former Collingwood defender Christian was appointed to the position of match review officer as part of an overhaul of the match review process, carried out by new AFL football boss Steve Hocking after his comprehensive review late last year. Christians assessments of bumping incidents this year have already led to Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray and Adelaide midfielder Richard Douglas being suspended for direct bumps to opponents heads. But the 1990 premiership defenders method of assessing bumps appears to be a significant shift from the previous match review panels strict liability approach. Im certainly a believer that if you take the care to execute the bump fairly and theres no foreseeable consequences that heads are going to clash, then certainly that will be taken into account, Christian said. Im not saying that every time we do get head clashes that players wont be liable. But in this particular case, I dont believe there was any liability at the hands of Mark LeCras. If you bump with shoulder to head with force, youre going to find yourself in trouble. But if you take the care to execute your bump fairly, which we believe Mark LeCras did ... then more than likely there will be no charge to answer. I think its reasonably clear cut. https://thewest.com.au/sport/west-coast-eagles/michael-christian-preserves-bumps-place-in-football-with-mark-lecras-ruling-ng-b88808355z Email Posted April 08, 2018 16:47:56
