AUSTRALIA could be the biggest loser from a trade war between China and the US, research has found, just as US President Donald Trump revealed plans to smash the Chinese economy with tariffs on up to $400 billion in trade.
In a grave escalation of the tit-for-tat trade war between Mr Trumps administration and China, Mr Trump announced yesterday he would look at imposing tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports. That move comes after his decision to slap a tariff of up to 25 per cent on $50 billion of Chinese imports, including including heavy equipment and medicines. In retaliation, China is imposing its own tariffs on $50 billion on US imports, focusing on goods out of areas of the US that supported Mr Trump at the 2016 presidential election. Mr Trump said yesterday if China reacted again to his tariffs he would double the impost. Further action must be taken to encourage China to change its unfair practices, open its market to United States goods, and accept a more balanced trade relationship, he said. Chinas Ministry of Commerce attacked the move, describing it as extreme pressure and blackmail. If the US loses its senses and publishes such a list, China will have to take comprehensive quantitative and qualitative measures and retaliate forcefully, it said. The move had an immediate impact on the Australian dollar, which fell below US74. But the situation could be much worse, because China accounts for one-third of Australias total exports. Curtin University economics lecturer Yixiao Zhou said under every scenario she had examined, Australia was a substantial loser from a trade war between China and the US. Dr Zhou and her team had looked at the US imposing tariffs on China without any retaliation, China imposing tariffs on US goods, and an all-out trade war between the two. In every case, Chinas standard of living is reduced by US tariffs which in turn cuts Chinese demand for a range of commodities, including Australian iron ore. Across every scenario, there is a fall in Australian GDP per capita or Australian living standards, Dr Zhou said. We think this is going to be a long-term conflict well into the future where you have an emerging economic power going up against an economic power that doesnt want things to change. AMP Capital chief economist Shane Oliver said though the Australian sharemarket appeared comfortable with Mr Trumps move, there were increasing risks of a global trade war. Dr Oliver said the first round of tariffs hit just 2 per cent of US imports. That would lift to 10 per cent if Mr Trump followed through with his threats, Dr Oliver said. It was a trade war that put the Great in the Great Depression. https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/australia/australia-hurts-as-china-and-us-head-towards-trade-war-ng-b88871683z

THE father of Meghan Markle has broken his silence over the royal wedding, saying he was jealous Prince Charles walked his daughter down the aisle instead of him.
Thomas Markle, 73, took part in a TV interview last night, revealing he cried as he watched Charles walk the Duchess of Sussex down the aisle at St Georges Chapel in Windsor on May 19. He also told Britains ITV network he has discussed politics on the phone with Prince Harry, who had told him to give Donald Trump a chance and that he was open to the experiment of Brexit. Mr Markles interview comes after Samantha Markle, his daughter from a previous marriage, once again attacked the Duchess of Sussex, accusing her of ignoring her father on Fathers Day. Samantha Markle, 53, took to Twitter to accuse Meghan of failing to deliver on a PR stunt by promising to visit her ill father in Mexico, but failing to turn up. In fact Meghan, who stepped out with Prince Harry at the weekend as they attended the wedding of his cousin Celia McCorquodale, had never publicly made a promise to visit her father. In his interview, Thomas Markle revealed he had apologised to Harry and Meghan for his involvement with paparazzi who staged shots of him, explaining he was trying to shape his image after being portrayed in the media as a hermit. He said Prince Harry had asked his permission for his daughters hand in marriage. I said to him, youre a gentleman, promise me youll never raise your hand against my daughter and I gave my permission, he said. He said he spoke on the phone to Meghan about Harry a few times, then Harry had spoken to him as well. The unfortunate thing for me now is Im a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle, Mr Markle said. I was honoured. I cant think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles. Mr Markle said he believed his 36-year-old daughter would handle her new life in the royal family well. My daughter is very intelligent. She knows how to choose who she wants to be with. Shes a smart girl and she made a good pick. News of Umqalis pregnancy is exciting because the southern white rhinos are part of a breeding program to safeguard the survival of the endangered species. Not that 23-year-old Umqali is showing. Zoos SA chief executive Elaine Bensted said because a female rhino already weighs about two tonnes, its impossible to detect a baby bump. You dont see the pregnancy until right at the end, she said. We dont do ultrasounds which we can with other animals like (giant panda) Fu Ni, who is trained to have one while she has something to eat because rhinos are so big. The pregnancy, which is Umqalis sixth, was confirmed by testing her blood for hormone levels. Camera IconUmqali with her first offspring Tundu, who died aged 18 months. Monarto is fundraising to build facilities for the quarantine and housing of more rhinos in the next few years. Last year Satara and Umqalis first offspring, Tundu, died at 18 months after rough play with other rhinos. Ms Bested said the new arrival would be given an African name by the family of a volunteer who made a donation to the rhino project before he died. Ms Dixon had just finished a gig making people laugh at the CBD's Highlander Bar on Tuesday night, but she never made it home. The 22-year-old's body was found by a passer-by in Princes Park at North Carlton about 3am Wednesday. Her accused killer, Jaymes Todd, 19 of Broadmeadows, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with rape and murder. Those touched by the tragedy have helped raise $32,284 on crowd funding platform GoFundMe, for Ms Dixon's family, surpassing its $1500 goal. The campaign was set up by Luka Muller, a friend of Ms Dixon's from the comedy scene. "These funds are being raised for the family of the victim, who I have had contact with," he said on the website. "I understand that Eurydice's father wishes to donate a large portion of the funds to charities that Eurydice supported." Comedians including Cal Wilson, Anne Edmonds and Celia Pacquola are among those to have made pledges. Friends and supporters have also paid tribute to the young woman. "We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of Eurydice Dixon. She was a remarkable, talented, kind, unique and universally loved person and the entire staff are shattered and heartbroken," Highlander Bar said in a statement. Comedian Chris Franklin posted to Facebook, saying the "Melbourne comedy community is grieving today. Eurydice was one of ours." "I worked with her over the last two festivals in Melbourne. All who can, in the comdey (sic) scene will be attending the Highlander gig next Tuesday to remember her," he wrote. The Comedy Women's Association described Ms Dixon as "a unique and talented voice and will be very much missed". Comedian Julia Morris took to Twitter to express her shock. "I am absolutely shattered to hear of the despicable death of Eurydice Dixon," she wrote. "An important and funny voice has been extinguished. Vale Eurydice Dixon." Todd has been remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on October 3. https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/crime/tributes-for-murdered-melbourne-comic-ng-s-1867978 THE Mullewa Muster and Rodeo might be the only place in the state where lasting eight seconds is considered an impressive feat.
More than 240 cowboys and cowgirls from across WA put their endurance to the test yesterday, attempting to cling to bucking bulls and broncos that are just as determined to rid themselves of the pesky riders. And while it might not sound like a long time, eight seconds feels like an eternity when you are being flung around like a rag doll with dust whipping around your face and the very real prospect of serious injury waiting should you let go. While the sport is dangerous, it can also be lucrative a few seconds work netting winners a share of the Musters $43,000 prize pool. Mullewa Muster and Rodeo secretary treasurer Jane Parker said more than 3000 people had travelled to the Mid West to watch the event, which took place beneath glorious sunshine. Sixteen riders came over from NSW and the rest are from all over WA, from Derby to Albany, she said. A significant slice of money raised at the not-for-profit event is donated to childhood cancer charity Camp Quality, with the remainder put towards staging the following years event.
